Still-life with Self Portrait

"Still-life with Self Portrait" Oil on Canvas  /  40" X 60"  /  1998
"This painting was completed after "The Flight to Heaven" and some of the same design elements are evident in a more cropped view. The painting centered on the wall over the night table is one of the first self portraits of my career and one of the very few original paintings I have allowed my self to keep. The convex mirror, also a recurring theme, is a symbolic devise used back as far as the Rennaisance (or further). It is here used as a symbol of introspection, of looking back on one's life. of self assessment. I was intrigued by the mixing of the cool natural light coming from the window and the warm incandesent light from the lamp. This would indicate a time of day (dawn or dusk) that I most associate with contemplation and stillness."
