Babette’s Chair

"Babette's Chair" Oil on Canvas  /  36" X 60"  /  2000
""Babette's Chair", is oil on canvas and measures 36" x 60". The sling chair with the black wrought frame in the left hand side of the painting belongs to Babette, a friend and artist working in the studio across the hall from me. Besides loving the design of this comfortable chair, I spent many happy times in it chatting with her over coffee on painting breaks. The chair began to represent the intimacy of sharing confidences, hopes and dreams with a trusted friend and as such the kernel of an idea which later became "Babette's Chair". The mirror symbolizes reflection, both literally and figuratively. The painting, I hope, elicits a contemplative stillness and restfulness that I strive for, and as homage to Babette, a more feminine feel. It is also the first time I have ever included flowers in any still-life."
