The Flight to Heaven

"The Flight to Heaven" Oil on Canvas  /  41" X 72"  /  1998
"Painted in 1998, "The Flight to Heaven" is a painting about loneliness and contemplation of the eternal. The scene is a pretty ordinary bedroom. This painting was done at a time when I was having some health related problems, (I'm HIV Positive) hence the pill bottles next to the bed. Remembering the friends I have lost over the years to AIDS (especially Rollie, my late partner) inspired the general feeling of the painting. White is a symbol of purity and grace and is here used also as a symbol of hope. The laughing Buddah was a gift to Rollie during his last months of life in 1992. I included it as a remembrance of this very special man. Again , in the foreground, Bart is keeping watch over the scene. The brilliant white light coming in the window and falling on the all white bed are symbolic for me of the loss of this courageous and loving man and the continued presence of his spirit in me. ""
