Making a Painting

"Making a Painting" Oil on Canvas  /  60" X 48"  /  1996
"This painting is about just what the title says. To construct the composition, I gathered the props and tools I use to "make a painting", (including myself being reflected in the mirror). All the objects in the composition relate in some way to the process from the stretchers resting against the rear wall to the can of gesso and T-square at the foot of the chair and the bowl of apples representing both the physical and mental sustenance required to get through a painting project like this one. This painting was done not too long after my partner's passing away. The white drape over the white chair appears in this painting (and also recurs in others) as a remembrance of this wonderful man's presence in my mind and heart."
